SCFT Members Wear Blue in Solidarity at the November SCCCD Board of Trustees Meeting

Thanks to all of the faculty who showed up at the November SCCCD Board of Trustees meeting! And a very special thanks to those who stepped up for public comment to give our part-timers voice! SAVE THE DATE: NEXT BOARD ACTION, DECEMBER 5TH AT 4 P.M.

In a show of solidarity, members of the State Center Federation of Teachers packed the boardroom for the November SCCCD Board of Trustees meeting. Consisting of both full-time and part-time faculty, the group was distinguished by their blue AFT shirts and held signs that among other things, read “equity, “fairness,” and “respect.” The action is just the beginning. After 9 months of negotiating a lot has been achieved; while the team continues to be hopeful, discussions have slowed around compensation. SCFT collectively decided that it was time to go to the governing  body to educate them on issues that faculty have been facing for far too long. During public comment, part-time faculty members shared with the Board personal stories that humanized the work life of the adjunct instructor, illustrating the time, effort, and personal sacrifice that it takes to foster student success.  This is not just a part-time job for our instructors; it is a commitment that they make to students that cannot be quantified only by the hours they spend in the classroom. These dedicated professionals hope to embed themselves securely in an institution where they can grow alongside their students and do what they love most–teach; instead many find themselves living at poverty level and in need of public assistance to do what they love. Even though unconscionable and lacking security, they trudge on with optimism to make SCCCD a place that students what to be.
